Six top spy books

Peter Millar, who reviews thrillers for the Times (London), nominates six top spy books...and only one features Agent 007.

Here's half Millar's list:
Casino Royale by Ian Fleming

The first Bond, destined (even in the new version) never to be filmed properly: 007 messes up and doesn’t get the girl.

The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy

Perhaps the first spy novel, an aristocrat saves toffs from the guillotine.

Funeral in Berlin by Len Deighton

The East End anti-Bond Harry Palmer (immortalised by Michael Caine).
